Admissions Exams

Most of all professional graduate schools require an entrance exam. DO NOT TAKE AN EXAM JUST TO SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE. Only take an entrance exam when you are ready and you want exam scores reported to the schools you are applying to. Ideally you would take the exam only once, but in some situations you may choose to retake the exam. Feel free to come and see a Pre-Health Advisor to discuss whether or not you should retake your exam. There are preparation services, practice exams and information available to assist students to become prepared to take the exams. The NMSU Student Success Center has made available to students practice books and study guides for the Dental Admission Test (DAT), Graduate Records Examination (GRE), and Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Visit them in the Hardman-Jacobs Learning Center or call 575-646-3136 for information.

For additional DAT, GRE, MCAT, plus PCAT, and OAT preparation help, students can use preparation materials provided by the Associations themselves (see links below). Otherwise, students can use outside services like Kaplan Test Prep, Altius Test Prep, Blueprint, Exam Krackers, and Princeton Review. However it must be understood that most of these “Test Prep” services are “for-profit” businesses and many of their services can cost above $500-$1500.

For less expensive options, student can purchase an exam preparation book from a local bookstore or online. With the completion of each of your science prerequisite courses, review that section of the book to keep up review of content and knowledge. MCAT test-takers can utilize Khan Academy for test preparation.
